President Donald Trump will “absolutely” designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations. But which cartels are the prime target of this new directive?

Here is a breakdown of Mexico's most powerful cartels:

Sinaloa

The Sinaloa cartel is one of the more well known cartels outside of Mexico. One of its senior leaders, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loear is currently on trial. The Sinaloa cartel controls most of north west Mexico. It also has several factions: the Sinaloa Federation, Beltran Levya Organization, Tijuana cartel and the Juarez cartel.

Tierra Caliente

The Tierra Caliente cartels control parts of south and southwest Mexico, as well as parts of the Yucatán Peninsula. They are the Sinaloa cartels biggest rivals. Their factions are: Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), Knights Templar and La Familia Michoacana.

Tamaulipas

The Tamaulipas cartel controls northeast Mexico, Mexico’s southern tip and parts of east central Mexico. Their factions are the Tamaulipas, Los Zetas and Gulf cartel. They are fighting over territories in southern Mexico with Tierra Caliente groups.
