Once upon a time, Black Friday used to actually be on Friday.

While big-box retailers in Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are prohibited from opening on Thanksgiving Day, other places start their sales on the holiday, with some even starting sales online, earlier in the week.

Some stores like Costco and Nordstrom refuse to open on Thanksgiving, while Macy’s, Walmart and others, open early evening.

165 million people are expected to shop over the Black Friday to Cyber Monday stretch, according to the National Retail Federation.

But as thousands plan to shop, others are participating in an anti-Black Friday movement.

It’s called ‘Buy Nothing Day’.

A day where people opt to do the opposite of Black Friday and buy nothing, in protest of consumerism.

In France, some lawmakers want to end the ‘holiday’. A legislative committee passed an amendment proposing to ban Black Friday, stating it causes “resource waste” and “overconsumption.” The National Assembly will debate the issue next month.

To combat Black Friday, the U.S. National Park Service has a campaign to #OptOutside and visit a park instead of going shopping.

People are also encouraged to participate in Small Business Saturday. A day used to promote local businesses, instead of big-box stores.
