In the latest development in US trade wars, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to slap 100% tariffs on French Champagne, cheeses and other products.
The U.S. proposed the tariffs to hit back at France after its tax on tech companies including Google, Amazon and Facebook. $2.4 billion worth of French goods could be impacted. However in actuality, the tariffs would have a wider impact on the region.
President Emmanuel Macron asserted the tariffs would impact all of Europe.
"We'll see where the discussions lead in the coming weeks, but it will involve a European response,” Macron said in a meeting with Trump on the sidelines of a NATO summit in London.
"Because, in effect, it wouldn't be France that is being sanctioned or attacked but Europe.”
According to Statista: The U.S. is France's second largest market for exports. The U.K. is number one.
"During the year 2017, the total champagne exports from France to the United Kingdom amounted to about 27 million of 75 centiliters. (25 ounces) bottles.
France is the main exporter for sparkling wine, with an export value of nearly $3.5 billion in 2017. The group Moët-Hennessy (LVMH Group) alone, operating among other well-known brands like Dom Pérignon and Veuve Cliquot, generated a turnover of about 2.4 billion euros from Champagne sales."

Nonetheless, producers of wine and cheese in France could be hit hard by any U.S. tariffs.
The Associated Press reports: "An industry association for pungent Roquefort cheese, among the targeted products, said the 100% tariffs could wipe out the U.S. market - 300 tons a year - for the blue-veined cheese.”
