A 23-year-old rape survivor was set on fire by a gang of five men, including the alleged rapist, as she made her way to court in Northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, according to Reuters.

This sparked public outrage over the scourge of crime and violence plaguing women in India.

All five men have been detained by police.

Protests have broken out in the country due to violence against women. Members of parliament and protesters are pressing for courts to fast-track rape cases while also demanding tougher penalties.

The woman is currently in critical condition, according to a doctor at Civil Hospital in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh.

She was on her way to catch a train to attend a hearing before she was doused in kerosene and set on fire, police said.
