A Navy sailor who shot three civilians, killing two of them, before taking his own life at Pearl Harbor has been identified. He was 22-year-old G. Romero, a military official told the Associated Press.

The shooting took place days before thousands of visitors were scheduled to gather to mark the 78th anniversary of the Japanese attack on the military base, which launched America into the Second World War.

Rear Adm. Robert Chadwick, commander of Navy Region Hawaii, said the service would evaluate whether security should be upgraded before the ceremony. The motive behind the shooting is unknown and is it not known if there is any relationship between the sailor and the three civilians, according to Chadwick.

G. Romero was identified as an enlisted sailor. Information on the type of weapon used and how shots were fired are still unknown, according to the AP. Chadwick said that information was a part of the investigation, as personal weapons are not allowed on the base.

The victim's names will not be released until the next of kin is notified.
