Four men accused of the gang rape and murder of a 27-year-old veterinarian were shot and killed by police on Friday. Police say they tried to escape from the crime scene where they had been brought to locate evidence.

The victim's burned body had been found in a field near a highway underpass outside Hyderabad, India.

Nationwide protests triggered by the attack had protesters demanding the death penalty for the suspects.

Around 300 people gathered to celebrate the suspects' deaths.

Although many people expressed satisfaction over the police shooting, a lawmaker accused the police of taking the law into their own hands.

Critics called the police shooting counterfeit justice. All India Progressive Women's Association demanded a thorough investigation into the shooting.
