The measles epidemic in Samoa is just a part of a global trend of spiking measles cases around the world.
The World Health Organization has reported outbreaks across Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
So far in 2019, the WHO has reported 413,308 measles cases around the world.
In 2011, there were 153,551 cases.
The 2019 numbers are a 169% increase from 2011.
In 2019 the country with the most number of cases was Madagascar, followed by Ukraine, and the Philippines.

In the United States, measles cases were also at a record high at 1,250 cases, the highest in 27 years.
