16-year-old Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez, from Guatemala, is the sixth child to die in ICE custody in the span of a year.

A nurse practitioner at the McAllen processing center diagnosed Carlos with the flu. Saying he had a 103 degree fever and would need to be sent to the ER if his condition worsened, according to ProPublica

Instead he was quarantined at a Border Patrol station in Weslaco, Texas.

Customs and Border Patrol  (CBP) officials were supposed to be monitoring him.

Carlos’s cellmate woke up the next morning and found him dead on the floor. He had been dead for four and half hours.

The video obtained by ProPublica contradicts Border Patrol’s statement.

In a “subject activity log” CBP says Carlos was checked on three times and they found nothing wrong with him.

They also said an agent found him dead during a morning check.

A statement from CBP on May 20, 2019 said, "The cause of death is not known at this time. Consistent with CBP policy, CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility has initiated a review."

Carlos died in CBP custody in May and according to ProPublica, they have declined to respond. CBP also refuses to release more information about his death to the public.

ProPublica got the surveillance video through the Weslaco Police Department.

It also reports, Carlos’s death led to changes requiring Border Patrol agents to enter cells regularly and take temperatures when migrants are sick.

Not only have children died in ICE custody but also 16 adults of varying nationalities.

Univision reports 5 Mexicans, 4 Hondurans, 2 Cubans, 2 Russians, 1 Armenian, 1 Cameroonian, 1 Indian and 1 Vietnamese had died while in U.S. federal custody.

Their ages range from 30 to 62.
