Bono: Brazil’s five-time world surf champion

Brazil has become a surfing superpower, and has a real chance at winning gold when the sport makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo next year. But there is only one Brazilian champion surfer, a little furrier than most- that is breaking records.

It is said that every dog has its day, but not every dog lives a dog’s life. For one chocolate Labrador every 24 hours is an adventure.

Starting with a breakfast of carrots and eggs and coconut water, to walking through the streets of Leblon to the beach, Bono is a normal dog doing what normal dogs do except when he isn’t surfing.

Bono is a five-time world champion in the tandem dog category, surfing with his sports and life partner Ivan Moreira, a 41-year-old surfer and personal trainer.

Ivan says his best friend is a natural and loves to compete:
"He  stops barking and focuses, only the tail wagging and moves his head with me, makes the maneuvers. He knows that."

The duo train in Rio de Janeiro but have been traveling the world since 2014 when they won their first title in a Surf Dog competition in California.

Being a professional surfer is the dream job for a dog like Bono, a Labrador. A breed that loves water and needs to exercise to stay fit and healthy.

At home the trophies are piling up, but the one Ivan treasures most is a Guinness world record for the longest stand-up paddleboard ride on a river by a human-dog team.

It was not a trivial feat: They rode a distance of nearly 1.7 kilometers in the Mearim River in Brazil’s Amazon basin.

But Bono also surfs alone and has twice won world championships in the solo category. He can even be seen in his own "Bono the Surfer Dog" local TV show.

And what began as pure fun when Bono was just five months old, has become a successful business for both dog and man, as Bono has grown into a mature eight-year-old.

"The only problem for this guy is that they live too short. They should live 25, 30 year, so let's live, so let's enjoy it, let’s have fun, and that is what we do," says Ivan.
