Merriam-Webster has named “they” as its word of the year.

According to the dictionary publisher, searches for “they” have risen 313% in the last year.

This nonbinary pronoun was officially added to the dictionary in September.

“They” is a pronoun a person uses when their gender identity is nonbinary, meaning they do not express an exclusively masculine or feminine identity, according to the dictionary.

Merriam-Webster notes searches for "they" spiked during January's Paris Fashion Week, which featured nonbinary model Oslo Grace, and again in April when US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal stated her child is gender-nonconforming. June, observed as LGBTQ Pride Month in the US and other countries, also brought a surge in searches.

"Quid pro quo," "impeach," "crawdad" and "egregious,” were other widely searched words in 2019, according to Merriam.
