The attackers who stormed a Jewish market on Tuesday afternoon in Jersey City, New Jersey were targeting the location, Mayor Steven Fulop said Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
"There were multiple other people on the street, so there were many other targets available to them that they bypassed to attack that place, so it was clear that was their target and they intended to harm people inside," Fulop said of the attackers.
The New Jersey Attorney General Gurbil Grewal, however, said that the motive for the attacks was still under investigation.
The killings began when the attackers shot a police officer at a cemetery, then proceeded to the market. The ensuing four-hour gun battle left six people dead, including the two gunmen, three people inside the kosher market and a police officer in a four-hour gun battle.
The killers were identified as David N. Anderson, 47, and Francine Graham, 50 who were also suspects in the killing of an Uber driver found in the trunk of a car over the weekend in Bayonne, New Jersey less than seven miles away.
Authorities are also investigating possible connections between the shooters and the Black Hebrew Israelite movement, known for ranting against whites and Jews. Investigators are also looking into social media postings by one of the attackers.
Fulop ordered police to be on high alert to protect Jewish neighborhoods following the attack, Reuters reports.
