Protests against a new citizenship law in India turned violent on Sunday.

Indian police clashed with students and others at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Dehli.

Police fired tear gas and used batons against the protesters.

The Indian government passed the controversial citizenship law last week.

It allows citizenship to some immigrants from neighboring countries, but excludes Muslims.The protests have now spread to at least 17 cities across India.
