A U.S. federal judge on Tuesday sentenced Rick Gates, a former Trump campaign official, to 45 days in jail, which he'll be allowed to serve intermittently.
The judgement resulted from his plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to a range of crimes including conspiracy and making false statements and agreed to cooperate with the government over then Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.
Gates also faces three years of probation, 300 hours of community service and 20,000 U.S. dollars in fines. His jail time could be served on weekends or on a schedule he arranged with his probation officer, said the judge.
Gates is one of President Donald Trump's former associates charged as a result of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign's ties with Russia.
In February 2018 he pleaded guilty to charges of making false statements and conspiracy against the U.S.
During sentencing, the judge noted what prosecutors called his "extraordinary" cooperation with the Mueller investigation, but she said she could not ignore his years of financial crimes and lies that continued even after pleading guilty and deciding to cooperate.
Prosecutors say that since signing his plea deal, Gates has met with investigators more than 50 times, giving Mueller's office and other prosecutors "truthful information" and therefore provided "extraordinary assistance" to the government, according to the report.
Gates and his ex-business partner, onetime Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, were among the first individuals charged during Mueller's Russia investigation. The men were indicted in Washington in October 2017 for conspiracy, money laundering and other alleged crimes. Prosecutors brought more charges against them four months later in a separate but related case in Virginia.
