All but a done deal: House on verge of impeachment vote, Trump lashes out

On Wednesday, Democrats in the lower House of Representatives pressed forward with a vote to impeach U.S. President Donald Trump as Republican lawmakers argued against the charges and the articles of impeachment. 

If it happens, Republican President Donald Trump would be the third U.S. president to be impeached.

U.S. President Trump has said that despite the Democrat's patriotic talk, they are perpetrating what he tweeted as "an assault on America." 

During a day of great political drama in the U.S. House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi argued the Founding Fathers' vision of the American republic was threatened by Trump and his actions in the White House. 

"Today, we are here to defend democracy for the people,″ Pelosi said to applause from Democrats in the chamber. "I solemnly and sadly open the debate on the impeachment of the president of the United States.” 

Republicans countered with members arguing the impeachment process was more of a partisan affair and "a sham." 

"This is not a solemn occasion,” said Rep. Doug Collins, the top Republican of the House Judiciary Committee. "You've been wanting to do this ever since the gentleman was elected.″
