Peruvians are protesting workers’ rights following the deaths of two teens at McDonald's.
Two young employees at the fast-food chain were electrocuted and died while working in the kitchen.
Alexandra Porras, 19, was electrocuted while cleaning a soda machine and Gabriel Campos, 18, was electrocuted while trying to help her.
The New York Times reports they were killed by a loose cable.
According to police, both were dead when emergency services arrived.
The deaths of Porras and Campos led to protests over exploitative and dangerous working conditions.
According to Peru’s statistics institute, nearly 70% of the workers are in unregulated working conditions.
Peru's public prosecutor's office is investigating the deaths.
According to the Guardian, if Sunafil, Peru’s workplace safety agency finds McDonald's responsible for the deaths of Porras and Campos, the branch could be fined up to 189,000 soles ($56,288).
