Ecuadorian authorities say they've contained an oil spill near the Galapagos Islands.
A crane collapsed onto an oil barge, sinking the ship and spilling 600 gallons of oil into the water.
The Ecuadorian government says it moved swiftly, enacting emergency protocols to contain the oil and protect the islands. Galapagos National Park authorities and the Ecuadorian Navy set up protective barriers around the oil patch.
The Galapagos archipelago is located in the Pacific Ocean around 1,000 kilometers east of Ecuador. The islands are among the most delicate and biodiverse ecosystems on earth.
The islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rare animals and plants.
After visiting the islands in 1835, naturalist Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution.
