A far-right religious group claimed responsibility for the Christmas Eve fire-bombing of the office for a comedy troupe behind a controversial "gay Jesus" Netflix special, Reuters reports.
A group identifying itself as "Popular National Insurgency Command of the Large Brazilian Integralist Family," began circulating a video on Christmas day, saying it attacked the comedy troupe's offices in Rio de Janeiro. Reuters reported the Brazilian police could not verify the self-confessed attackers were behind the firebombing.
No one was hurt in the fire and guards put out the blazes. The troupe, Porta dos Fundos, said in a statement that it hopes the perpetrators will be caught and punished and Brazil “will survive this storm of hatred.”
The special, which portrays Jesus bringing a boyfriend home to meet his family, generated significant controversy in Brazil - home to the world's largest population of Roman Catholics. Reuters reports that around two million people petitioned Netflix to remove the special, because "it offended Christians."
