Aceh province was closest to the earthquake. Governor Nova Iriansyah told mourners at a ceremony on Thursday the "people in Aceh were able to overcome suffering and rise again thanks to assistance from all Indonesians and from people all over the world."

Businesses were closed, boats could not sail and flags were flown at half staff in remembrance of those who died. 

People in Thailand also attended memorials. Police say almost 400 bodies are still unidentified and unclaimed in Thailand.
