In Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu, at least 79 people were killed Saturday morning when a truck bomb exploded at a busy security checkpoint.
According to ambulance drivers, at least 125 others were injured from the rush hour explosion.
Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed labeled the attack as a “heinous act of terror" and pointed the blame at al-Shabab - and extremist group with ties to al-Quaida. Al-Shabab has previously been tied to deadly attacks on schools and shopping malls in Kenya.
Among the dead were mostly police officers and university students.
