Protesters gathered in the streets of Hong Kong on December 31 to ring in the New Year.

More than 1,000 of them formed human chains across various Hong Kong districts, including Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Tai Po. Demonstrators called on Hong Kong citizens to join another protest on New Year’s Day.

For the first time in a decade, Hong Kong's Tourism Board scrapped its traditional fireworks display amid safety concerns related to the ongoing protests. The city ushered in 2020 with an enhanced version of Victoria Harbour's daily light show and some rooftop fireworks.
