Cold temperatures collided with high levels of air pollution, leaving dense cold smog that enveloped most of Northern India, the Associated Press reports.
The capital New Delhi was set to register its coldest December day since 1901.
Temperatures dropped to 1 degree Celsius (34 Fahrenheit) in New Delhi. Vendors and people sleeping on the streets wrapped themselves in sweaters and blankets and lit small bonfires to keep warm.
In Uttar Pradesh, Reuters reports, six people died when their car skidded off the road and fell into a canal.
Numerous flights were diverted, canceled or delayed in New Delhi, according to local reports.
The cold and fog are expected to continue into New Year's Day.
