The White House is proposing a set of 10 principles to guide federal regulation of artificial intelligence for medicine, transportation, financial and other agencies.
A document from the White House explained how it would make regulatory decisions, stating U.S. agencies "must consider fairness, non-discrimination, openness, transparency, safety and security" before devising new AI regulations for the private sector.
The rules won't impact how federal agencies use AI. There is a planned month-long public comment period before the rules take effect.
The White House is also pushing for European officials to take steps in laying out new regulatory principles, in order to avoid "overreach," according to Reuters.
Some of the principles focus on improving public trust and participation with AI, scientific integrity, transparency, safety, fairness and flexible regulations.
