Plastic bags are now legally banned in Mexico City. Starting this year, the distribution and sale of single-use plastic bags now carries fines of between $120 and $9,000.

Vendors who are found using plastic bags are fined or in some cases arrested and businesses shut down.

Mexico City's metropolitan area is home to nearly 9 million people. And it reportedly goes through 128 tons of single use plastic every day.
