Prosecutors and defense lawyers in the impeachment trial of U.S. President Donald Trump made their closing arguments in the Senate on Monday.
House Democratic managers referenced the country's Founding Fathers, while also urging senators to view Trump's actions not as isolated, but part of a pattern that would allow him to "cheat" in the 2020 presidential election.
But the president's defense team argued the Democrats were out to impeach Trump from the beginning of his presidency and undo the 2016 election. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone called for an end to the partisan "era of impeachment."
Centrist Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin called for the president to be censured for holding up military aid to Ukraine in return for an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden. A formal reprimand would mean the Senate would officially condemn his wrongful conduct, according to the resolution, but there would not be a removal from office.
