While touting the U.S. economy in a speech with the nation's governors, President Donald Trump commented the deadly coronavirus would no longer be a threat as winter comes to a close and warmer weather begins.
"The virus that we're talking about, a lot of people think that goes away in April," Trump said. "As the heat comes in - we're in great shape."
Last week, Trump expressed a similar outlook for China in a phone call with President Xi Jinping.
So far, the coronavirus has infected more than 40,000 people, mostly in China, More than 900 have died. At least two dozen countries have confirmed cases.
Scientists are much more cautious about when the virus will be stopped.
According to CNN, infectious disease experts say it's too early to say because there still needs to be an assessment of this particular virus.
Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, said, "It would be reckless to assume things will quiet down in spring and summer."
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the risk of the virus to the American public is low.
Nevertheless, the Trump administration continues to impose travel restrictions for foreign nationals who have visited China over the past two weeks from entering the U.S.
