Dylann Roof is a condemned man, sentenced to death for the mass murder of nine African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17, 2015.

They had been attending a Bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and even invited Roof to join them, before he opened fire with a .45-caliber Glock pistol.

Among the dead were a state senator and the senior pastor of the church.

CGTN visits the site of the attack nearly five years on.
