The U.S. stock market closed with the Dow and the S&P 500 suffering their biggest losses since 2008 financial crisis.
On Friday morning the Dow Jones Industrial average plunged more than a 1,000 points for the third time in a week. It rebounded and finished the day nearly 360 points down.
The S&P 500 suffered "its fastest ever 10% decline from an all-time high," The Wall Street Journal reported.
According to S&P Dow Jones Indices, global stock markets lost $6 trillion in value in just six days.
The Washington Post reports some investors have been calling for the U.S. government to intervene.
The rout may not be over. New COVID-19 cases have been reported in six different countries this week - Nigeria, Estonia, Denmark, Netherlands, Lithuania and Mexico.
On Friday, the World Health Organization raised its global risk assessment to "very high."
