Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison on Wednesday in the landmark #MeToo rape case, the Associated Press reports.

Weinstein was convicted last month of raping an aspiring actress in a New York City hotel room in 2013 and forcibly performing oral sex on a former TV and film production assistant Mimi Haleyi at his apartment in 2006.

But the former high-powered film mogul has had a long and extensive list of accusations of violating women over the years.

Prior to Weinstein sentencing, his accusers spoke in court about the impact he had on their lives, and the empowerment they felt during the trial when they testified against him.

"Although this is a first conviction, this is not a first offense," Judge James Burke said before revealing the prison sentence. Weinstein faced a maximum sentence of 29 years.

After two of his accusers confronted him in a Manhattan court, Weinstein broke his silence to say he felt "remorse for this situation." He added, however, that men are being accused of "things that none of us understood."
