Hundreds of prisoners broke out of four Brazilian prisons on Monday. The escapes happened a day before the prisoners' day release privileges were to be suspended to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Sao Paulo state prison authority said the suspension was necessary because 34,000 convicts would be returning to prison and "would have high potential to install and spread the coronavirus in a vulnerable population, creating health risks" for other prisoners and prison employees.
