Coronavirus is hitting U.S. ports hard. Almost 10 million containers usually pass through the Port of Los Angeles every year. But February's cargo volumes were down more than 20% compared to 2019.

Cruise liners also aren't stopping here. That means some workers like drivers are losing their jobs.  It's the same story up and down America's coastlines. The shipping industry was already suffering from the U.S.-China trade war. Cargo flow between the U.S. and China was way down in 2019. After two months on lockdown, ports in China are starting to boost their activity again. U.S. ports need to keep enough workers healthy to handle a surge from China.
