From Santiago in Chile to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the coronavirus is impacting Latin America, the world's most unequal region. In many cases, it was wealthy Latin Americans who brought the virus to their countries returning from work trips and holidays in the U.S. and Europe.

The wealthy in Latin America can afford private healthcare to combat COVID19. While poor have to rely on the often inadequate state medical provision. Experts warn the coronavirus could kill scores of people living from day-to-day, often in unsanitary conditions.  In Peru's capital, where more than a million lack running water, the supply has run dry as the vendors can't arrive during  quarantine..

Some countries are making payments to informal workers like maids, street vendors but the cover is patchy. Peru has announced a payment of $108 for the 2.7 million households classified as living in extreme poverty. As the pandemic spreads, the crisis deepens in the world's most unequal continent.
