Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have removed posts from Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro because of COVID-19 misinformation.

Bolsonaro posted videos where he said the anti-malaria prescription drug hydroxychloroquine is effective treatment for COVID-19 and encouraged ending social distancing.

The companies say what Bolsonaro shared on these social media platforms violated their rules against posting harmful content. They're trying to keep disinformation about COVID-19 from spreading online.

The effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine for treating the virus has received mixed results in the science community. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is investigating the drug through clinical trials.

According to a Twitter spokesperson, Bolsonaro has declined to comment on the removal of his postings to social media, Bloomberg reports.
