COVID-19 is a virus attacks the lungs and can cause serious infections. It could damage patients’ brain, heart, kidneys, and liver. People have also died of massive organ failure.

Chinese medical teams have used different treatment methods to help patients recover, such as stem cell and artificial liver and blood purification in severe cases.

In this clip from CGTN America's Big Story: Widespread, the patient eventually completes his blood purification therapy, with no increase in inflammation. All of his organs are saved. Doctors take him off assisted ventilation and he resumes breathing on his own.

In April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized emergency use of the first blood purification system to treat  young COVID-19 patients who were admitted to the intensive care unit with confirmed or imminent respiratory failure.
