Thousands of people waited in a line 2.5 miles (4 km) long. They queued up in hopes of getting one of 8,000 food parcels, donated by private businesses in the city of Centurion, South Africa.

South Africa was under lockdown for 5 weeks to combat COVID-19, but eased some restrictions on May 1.

Still many are feeling the financial strain of an already precarious economic situation. As of May 1, South Aftica had less than 6,000 confirmed cases and 116 deaths.
