As the coronavirus pandemic grows so does the need for equipment to treat patients, especially ventilators.

In Colombia, a team of engineers and scientists created three different low-cost, open-source ventilators to help treat COVID-19 patients.

This version of a ventilator is expected to cost around a thousand dollars, which is much cheaper than the 25-thousand dollar ventilators being sold around the world.

The prototypes were made under a Medellin Medical innovation initiative called InnspiraMED that brought together 50 different participants from government, the public institutions, universities, and businesses. They have already undergone the first of three trials and are expected to enter production in May.

Two of the ventilators will be mass produced by Auteco mobility, one of the Colombia's largest motorcycle distributors.
