More than 60 New York kids are experiencing rare symptoms doctors believe are COVID-19 related.

A survey by the New York State Department of Health found the children to have a new pediatric multi-symptom inflammatory syndrome with symptoms similar to toxic shock or Kawasaki disease, which can lead to inflammation of the blood vessels.

Doctors don't know the full spectrum of the illness yet.

The Health department says symptoms include fever, rashes, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea but less than half of the patients in the city had any shortness of breath.

New York City issued a health alert on Monday, advising parents to take their children to the doctor immediately if they show symptoms related to the syndrome.

Doctors believe these symptoms could be a "post-immune reaction to COVID-19," where the body keeps fighting the disease, even weeks after being sick.

Similar cases have also shown up in Europe and other parts of the U.S.

Overall, the number of children with these rare symptoms is low and most have responded to treatment, the Washington Post reports.

According to the New York Times, there is no solid data about how many children in the U.S. are experiencing this syndrome  but none have died from the illness.
