Nurses from National Nurses United (NNU) protested outside of the White House Thursday, in honor of those who have died because of COVID-19.

They read the names of 88 U.S. nurses who have died from the virus after treating others and placed a symbolic 88 pairs of nurse shoes in front of the White House.

This week marks National Nurses Appreciation Week and the NNU union is demanding the U.S. federal government do more to protect healthcare workers during the pandemic.

The International Council of Nurses estimates at least 90,000 healthcare workers worldwide have been infected by COVID-19.

The association says more than 260 nurses have died of the disease.
