On March 31, Russia only reported 2,330 cases. By April 30, there were 106,498.

More than half are in Moscow and Mayor Sergei Sobyanin estimates there's hundreds of thousands more not counted.

Sobyanin told Russia 24 Thursday that based on results from tests, the capital city likely has more than 300,000 cases or 2-2.5% of residents.

That's three times what is officially reported.

"We should never lose optimism. How soon we come out from this situation will largely depend on ourselves, on our discipline. I do not want to predict the future, but my personal opinion is that we will not be able to return to full-fledged life without restrictions soon," the Moscow mayor said.

The mayor extended stay-at-home restrictions until May 31 and has required that all residents wear masks and gloves on public transportation.

The only time people can leave their homes is to seek emergency medical aid, travel to work, grocery shop, walk pets and dispose of garbage.
