The impact of coronavirus travel disruptions are now felt by two giant pandas in Canada.

Canada's Calgary Zoo said on Tuesday that it will send Er Shun and Da Mao back to China as it is hard to source enough fresh bamboo to feed the duo amid the pandemic.

China flies fresh bamboo to Calgary every two weeks, but the flights have been disrupted and other alternatives and other alternatives to gather bamboo either face delays or supplies are past expiration point.

Calgary Zoo President Clement Lanthier said the best and safest place for Er Shun and Da Mao to stay in during these challenging and unprecedented times is where bamboo is abundant and easy to access.

Er Shun and Da Mao arrived in Canada in 2013 as part of a 10-year agreement between Canada and China over the animal's protection and research.

After spending five years at the Toronto Zoo, the two adult giant pandas were moved to the Calgary Zoo in March 2018 with twin cubs, Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue, which traveled home to China in January.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, has completed preparations for the return of the duo.
