Colombia: Technology challenges in times of quarantine

During the COVID-19 lockdown, the Internet has been key to keeping citizens and workers connected. But how is a country like Colombia doing?

Diego Molano, former Minister of Information and Communications Technology in Colombia,  says Colombia's 58 percent Internet usage rate is almost as high as China's, but Molano says the uses are different.

According to Molano, 85 percent of those connected use it for basic entertainment purposes, not to be more productive, not to learn or work on the net.

He believes that Colombia faces three challenges which go beyond basic connectivity. The first is for citizens to understand the Internet's value. Second, how to transform businesses in poor communities through technology. And third, education – teaching people the skills to use the web and related technologies effectively.
