The death of a 57-year-old man from El Salvador due to coronavirus complications earlier this month has brought renewed attention to the plight of detained immigrants under custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
ICE said Carlos Excobar-Mejia had been undergoing treatment after becoming sick at the Otay Mesa Detention Center. With nearly 200 cases, the facility has recorded one of the highest infection rates among all of the agency's facilities.
