41 million unemployed in U.S., GDP growth down 5%

About 2.1 million Americans filed new unemployment claims in the last week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported.

The latest U.S. jobless numbers bring the total unemployed since mid-March to 41 million.

The transportation industry has seen thousands of job cuts in the last week. American Airlines will slash about 5,000 positions, 30% of its management and support staff.

The U.S. Real Gross Domestic Product decreased 5% in the first three months of 2020.

The real GDP decline reflects negative personal consumption spending, private investment and exports.
