Washington, D.C., began its Phase One reopening Friday, after two months of lockdown because of COVID-19. 

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser lifted the stay-at-home order but gatherings of 10 or more people are still prohibited.

Face masks and social distancing are also highly encouraged. 

As part of Phase One, restaurants are opening with outdoor seating only, and hair salons and barbershops can reopen but must follow tighter COVID-19 guidelines.

Retail businesses may begin to reopen but only for curbside pickup of online or phone orders.

Some outdoor spaces such as parks and field areas can reopen over the weekend but contact sports are prohibited and recreation centers and indoor facilities must remain closed.

Also on Friday, the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area that includes parts of Maryland and Virginia  reached a grim milestone, passing 100,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

That means six of every six 1,000 area residents have tested positive for coronavirus. 

Maryland's largest D.C. suburbs will begin reopening June 1.
