It’s the new rallying cry for advocates of law enforcement reform in the U.S.: "Defund the Police"- a push to shift funding away from expensive traditional policing and toward mental health resources, homeless outreach, drug treatment and other programs.

Proponents say police have become a catch-all force, responding to calls for minor infractions that can escalate into violent altercations and send too many young black men to jails and prisons.
