Sea turtles find protection from Senegal fishermen

In 2004, the Senagalese government set up the Marine Protected Area of Joal-Fadiouth.

Endangered migratory species like the sea turtle pass through its 146 square kilometres, (56 sq. miles.)

Instead of imposing restrictions, the MPA tries to educate communities about the economic benefits of conserving marine life.

Now when fishermen haul up a sea turtle caught in a net, instead of keeping it to eat, as they once did, they’ve now become protectors of this endangered species.
