Confirmed COVID-19 cases around the world passed 15.5 million on Friday. Over 4 million of those new cases are in the U.S.

The U.S. death count from COVID-19 is also on the rise, surpassing 145,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new statement on Friday with guidelines for reopening schools in the fall.

The New York Times reports, this new guidance comes after President Trump criticized previous recommendations by the CDC, calling them “very tough and expensive.”

The reopening of U.S. schools remains a controversial topic. President Trump has urged schools to reopen quickly and left the decisions on how to do so to individual states.

Some U.S. school districts will return in the fall with online classes. While in other states, students will either return to in-person instruction or a hybrid program.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, supported the CDC’s new guidelines, during an interview with the Washington Post on Friday.
“I think the C.D.C. has put some good guidance down,” he said.

As the virus continues to spread quickly through the country, more establishments are requiring customers wear masks.
McDonald’s, Chipotle, Target and Walmart have joined the list.

But the U.S. isn’t the only country experiencing a resurgence of the coronavirus.

The New York Times reports, new cases around the world have jumped 35% since the end of June.
Including in countries that were previously seen as positive examples for pandemic response.
