Demonstrators in California have been demanding the early release of prison inmates as COVID-19 deaths mount in California prisons.
San Quentin State Prison, north of San Francisco, has been California's hardest hit with over 500 active cases. Nineteen inmates have died there - with 10 fatalities, ironically, on death row.
San Quentin had zero coronavirus cases until the May transfer of 121 inmates from the California Institute of Men in Chino.
Statewide, more than 1,800 inmates have tested positive. 47 inmates died of "suspected virus complications." Officials say more than 5,600 prisoners have recovered.
Across the U.S., more than 57,000 prison inmates have tested positive for the coronavirus since the outbreak began. An estimated 34,000 prisoners have recovered and at least 651 died.
