As the U.S. tries to stay ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic, a survey has found more than 6,300 coronavirus cases linked to U.S. colleges.

According to the New York Times, a survey of both public and private colleges link thousands of the infections to about 270 colleges.

The virus is still surging in the U.S. with nearly 4.4 million cases. College administrators have been working to find ways to safely reopen campuses this fall while others have turned to online classes.

Some of the more serious campus outbreaks have been reported in the states of Texas, Florida, Georgia, Washington and California.

George Washington University, in Washington D.C., is the latest to cancel its on-campus plans for the fall semester.

Undergraduate and most graduate classes will now be online joining California State University and Harvard that had already made that decision.
