Amid the pandemic, about one in four New Yorkers may be “food insecure”—which is not getting enough nutritious food to live an “active, healthy life.”
With record unemployment levels, food stamp usage has grown, and it is seen as a critical part of the public safety net.
To support New Yorkers through the pandemic and shutdowns, about a half-billion dollars in food stamps, at $420 apiece, are being given to every public-school student in the city. That includes wealthier families that do not need the funds.
