It has become a familiar scene in Brazil during the annual dry season. Fires raging in the Amazon rainforest.

This one began as an illegal fire set by a farmer to clear his land.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has denied the existence of fires in the Amazon.

The government’s own figures tell a different story. The national space research agency says more than 10,000 fires were recorded in the first 10 days of August.
